Thoughts on Chasing Coral

Normal Coral                             Bleached Coral

The movie I watched this week was Chasing Coral by Jeff Orlowski. The movie is about trying to show people about coral bleaching. A specific scene that got to me was probably was when they were looking at the video footage. It went from clear to becoming more unfocused every time. That angers me because they put in all this hard work and the footage came out worthless. I know if that happened to me I would be so mad. Also earlier they said that they had no time to test the cameras, but they  decided to make new ones and test those. Why didn't they test the first time they made the cameras?! It wouldn't of been unfocused if they would have done at least one test. That is what also angered me about the scene. If I was in that situation I would have tested so that I knew they would work and would not have to start over. They were working on something really important and had like no time to fail. They wasted months of work, coral bleaches fast.

I think the one thing that surprised me is how much the ocean temperature has risen. Some has risen to almost as high as 12 degrees and as low as 4 degrees. 4 degrees may not seem like much but for the coral it means death. It caught me off guard because normally like say the temperature outside went up like 2 degrees. It probably wouldn't feel like much of a difference. So when I think of the temperature going up a degrees or few I don't think it would be that bad. But in the ocean that is really bad. I was not expecting like 2 degrees to affect coral and make it start bleaching. Seeing the heat in the ocean on the screen really showed me that the ocean is really heating up from climate change.

I've noticed in this documentary they say we need to tell people about it but they don't say how we can stop the coral bleaching. That is a question I have. How can people help with stopping the coral bleaching? During the film I experienced the feelings of sadness, anger, and happiness. I was sad towards the end because it was showing what the reefs look like today. I experienced anger when they messed up the cameras and people did not care at all. And I experienced happiness when I saw the coral alive. Also when people wanted to learn about coral bleaching towards the end of the documentary. I just feel like people don't care much about the coral reefs and don't think it effects them in anyway when it does a huge bunch.

We avoid research in summaries because we will want to explain the research we found. Once we explain it becomes more of an analysis. We won't focus on what is happening on the documentary but more on the research and connecting it to the documentary. In fact there probably won't be much on the documentary. The summary wouldn't even be called a summary anymore, it would be more of a research paper.

Reflecting

I can not believe it is the end of the semester already. What happened to it being the beginning and working on a documentary paper. I...
